Research Outsmarts Endometriosis

ROSE-logo-FINAL1

For those of you with Endometriosis, The Feinstein Institute was commissioned by the Endometriosis Foundation of America to conduct a study of 200 women each year.  It’s time to do something! We (the women!) provide either a blood sample or a saliva sample, as well as answer a few questions, and (optional) provide a sample of our menstrual blood.  Some women are even able to provide samples that were biopsied in past surgeries, and can ask for the future surgery biopsied tissues to be handed over as well.  Members of your family who do not have Endo may also participate.  Again, trying to study all aspects of this disease…including those NOT affected.

The Feinstein Institute will process all of this data and research to help understand Endometriosis on a cellular and genetic level!  One day there will be better treatments. Better answers.  And a CURE!  Steps like these will only lead to the right direction.

Feel Good Friday!

Marilyn_Monroe_II

Many of us with Endometriosis struggle with “feel good” issues.  There are days where we just feel plain ugly due to our disease, or the bloating, swelling and pain it causes.  So I’m deeming Fridays as “Feel Good Fridays!”  Once a week, I’ll post a quote to remind us just how beautiful we truly are, on the inside & out.

I cannot think of a better woman to quote to start off the Feel Good Fridays tradition than Marilyn Monroe!  You may or may not know it, but Marilyn suffered from Endometriosis herself.

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” ~Marilyn Monroe

So Warriors, remember, we may be imperfect, but we are still gloriously beautiful. And happy Friday!

Yours, Lisa

Inconspicuous Pain Relief

Hypothetical, but it happens more often than not : So it’s one of those flareup, crampy days.  But you HAVE to go to work. You have to run errands. You have to face the world.  What do YOU do?  Can’t plug a heating pad in and walk around all day – you’d need one hellava long extension cord…Painkillers may not be an option for you that day.  You may need your full faculties. Lord knows I do…

So I’m exploring options as far as “inconspicuous” pain relief.

Liquid Crazy Injections

Syringe containing Lupron Depot

In August of 2014, I began my Lupron Depot injections.  What is Lupron Depot? I affectionately call it Liquid Crazy.

What is Lupron Depot? It’s a drug that stops the production of Estrogen and other hormones that may cause Endometrosis implants to grow, scar, and spread.  It may also supposed to shrink any implants and adhesions.  What does that mean for my body?  It throws me into temporary menopause, as well as other side effects.

I can’t eat WHAT?!?

nutrition pyramid

Since my June 30, 2014, surgery and diagnosis of Endometriosis, I went on a radical journey to find out how I can help my body fight this disease, especially while I was waiting for the insurance to approve my treatment regimen.  Several books and webpages pointed out the same facts of what foods to avoid, and which to devour!  So, overnight I made a decision: to do a 180-degree flip on what I did, and did not, eat.

Some say the choice and change was too rapid.  I should have eased into it, rather than cold turkey’d it.  I agree now, but hindsight and all of that jazz.  Regardless, I feel SO much better.  I don’t know if it’s the dietary change, or the Lupron Depot injections, or both, but I do feel a lot better (from time to time).

Raising funds for the Endometriosis Foundation of America!

Bloomin' Uterus logo that reads "I will endure. I will flourish. And I am still beautiful." The bloomin' uterus logo is flowers forming the shape of a uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries

Those of you who are familiar with the Bloomin’ Uterus already know what’s going on…the rest of you?  🙂  I am raising funds and awareness regarding Endometriosis.  You can donate to my fundraising efforts (and obtain a Bloomin’ Uterus button!) on my Gofundme page.  All the money goes straight to the Endometriosis Foundation of America. The fundraising campaign started and was quickly followed by an idea to make buttons of a design I created after learning I have Endometriosis.

The Bloomin’ Uterus was born! What’s this Bloomin’ Uterus business?!? My nurse once described Endometriosis like crab grass…it just lives there and grows and grows and grows, despite how much you cut it out. So I felt disgusting and gross on the inside…until I created the Bloomin’ Uterus! A fun coping mechanism, and spreading Endometriosis Awareness along the way.

1.5″ buttons

The buttons project been a huge hit! Not only with women who are suffering from Endometriosis, but also among their friends and families.  May this become a badge of courage, an honor to wear.   It’s been an incredible bonding experience for me and my fellow EndoWarriors. And it has taken my breath away.

text that reads "Endo is such a stupid disease, but your image symbol for endo gives it so much more meaning to me. I am a woman. I have an invisible illness. I still have value. And I am still beautiful."
One EndoWarrior’s words summed up exactly how I feel about this entire project. Bloomin’ Uterus buttons touching lives and hearts.

Thank you, to everyone.

Yours, Lisa
